Tavernas & Local Flavours

Fresh, simple and unmistakably Corfiot
Corfu has its own cuisine, shaped by Venetian, Greek and Mediterranean influences, and Ipsos is a very easy place to enjoy it. From a sea-view table with the day's catch to a family taverna in a village square, here is what to order and how to eat well.
Dishes to try
The Corfiot table
Pastitsada
Slow-cooked and spicedA Corfiot Sunday classic: pasta with meat, usually rooster or beef, slow-cooked in a rich, lightly spiced tomato sauce.
Sofrito
Veal in white wine and garlicThin slices of veal cooked gently with garlic, white wine and parsley, usually served with rice or potatoes.
Bourdeto
A peppery fish stewA spicy fish stew in a red, peppery sauce, traditionally made with scorpion fish.
Fresh seafood
Straight from the IonianGrilled fish, calamari and prawns in the beachfront tavernas. Ask what has come in that day.
Local drinks and sweets
Don't leave without trying
Corfu is known for its kumquat liqueur and sweets, and for tsitsibira, a traditional ginger beer left over from British times. Try them with a Greek coffee in a traditional kafenio, where time moves slowly and nobody will hurry you.
How to choose a good taverna
Our simple rules
- Look for menus with seasonal, local dishes and a crowd of Greek families.
- Ask for the fish of the day and have it weighed at the table.
- Order a few starters to share, the Greek way.
- Book ahead for waterfront tables in July and August.
