Cycling & Hiking in Northern Corfu

Wooden walkway beside green woodland in Corfu

Green hills, old villages and sea views on two wheels or on foot

Behind Ipsos the land rises quickly into olive groves, cypress trees and mountain villages. Whether you want an easy walk before dinner or a proper day in the hills, northern Corfu rewards anyone who sets out early with a hat and plenty of water.

Agios Markos village and monastery

A short walk from the apartments

The old village of Agios Markos, close to Ipsos, was abandoned years ago and is slowly being restored, with old stone houses emerging from the ivy and undergrowth. The nearby 15th-century monastery of Agios Markos is a peaceful place to visit and a good first outing for a gentle morning walk.

Mount Pantokrator

The roof of Corfu

At roughly 900 metres, Mount Pantokrator is the highest peak on the island. Its summit offers sweeping views across the north of Corfu and over to the mainland coast. You can walk up from the villages on its slopes, but most visitors drive part of the way, so a car is recommended.

Old Perithia

A village at the foot of Pantokrator

Old Perithia is one of the oldest settlements on Corfu, a largely abandoned stone village in a mountain bowl that now has a handful of tavernas serving simple local food. It is an atmospheric stop for lunch after a walk, and well worth the drive.

The Corfu Trail

Long-distance walking

The Corfu Trail runs for around 220 kilometres from the south to the north of the island. You do not need to walk all of it: short sections near the north-east coast pass through olive groves, villages and viewpoints, and make excellent half-day walks.

Cycling

Quiet roads and steady climbs

Roads away from the coastal strip are quiet, scenic and often shaded by olive trees, but they can be steep. Bike and e-bike hire is available in the resorts along the coast, and an electric bike makes the hills much more enjoyable. Start early to avoid the midday heat.

  • Carry plenty of water: the summer sun is strong.
  • Wear proper shoes for stony paths, and a hat.
  • Check opening times of village tavernas before you go.
  • Tell us your plans and we will gladly suggest a route.
